A website for a luxury brand should create a sophisticated experience that reflects the exclusivity and quality of what it sells. Eight principles:

  1. Invest in photography and film. Professional imagery should show the craftsmanship and the details.
  2. Keep it clean and minimal. No clutter. Let typography and white space do the work.
  3. Use materials and accents with restraint. Metallic tones and references to fine materials can signal quality, as long as they're subtle.
  4. Add depth carefully. Gentle motion, such as parallax scrolling, can create a sense of depth without becoming a gimmick.
  5. Create a sense of exclusivity. Members-only areas or private previews make loyal customers feel special.
  6. Make it interactive. Product customization tools or virtual tours show the level of craft behind each piece.
  7. Make buying effortless. A smooth, secure checkout is part of the luxury experience.
  8. Design for mobile first. Many luxury customers browse on their phones. The experience should feel just as considered there.
