The shopper arrives from ChatGPT: what high-end brands should fix before the holidays
Shoppers who arrive from ChatGPT and other AI assistants convert better than almost anyone. What high-end brands should fix before the holidays, and how to measure it.

This holiday season, more of the people who reach your website will have already asked an AI assistant what to buy. They arrive later in the decision, often on a product page instead of the homepage, and they convert better than almost any other visitor. For a high-end brand, that changes what the website has to do in the first ten seconds.
What the numbers say
Adobe, which measures more than a trillion visits to US retail sites, forecasts $275.1 billion in US online holiday spending between November 1 and December 31, up 6.7% from last year. It expects traffic from AI assistants to retail sites to rise 130% over the same period, counting only shoppers who click a link in an AI answer.
- Last season, November and December 2025, AI-driven traffic to US retail sites rose 693% year over year, and those visitors converted 31% better than visitors from other sources.
- This summer, in July 2026, AI-referred traffic was up 62% year over year and converted 60% better than non-AI traffic. It was the eleventh month in a row that AI visitors converted better.
- Once they arrive, Adobe found that these visitors spend 59% more time on site, bounce 33% less and bring in 53% more revenue per visit.
Growth rates this large start from a small base, so don’t read them as share. Search, email and direct visits still matter more for most stores. But the direction is clear, and the quality of the visitor is the real story: someone who asked an assistant a careful question and clicked through is close to buying.
The checkout inside ChatGPT came and went
In September 2025, OpenAI launched Instant Checkout, which let people buy inside ChatGPT, starting with Etsy sellers. In March 2026, it stepped back. OpenAI said the first version “did not offer the level of flexibility” it wanted, and it repositioned ChatGPT as a place to research and compare products, with purchases completed on the merchant’s own site or through merchant apps inside ChatGPT. Google and Shopify have built their own standards for AI shopping, and Shopify now makes eligible stores’ catalogs available to AI assistants.
For luxury and design-led brands, this is good news. The sale still happens on your website, in your typefaces and your voice, with your service around it. The assistant’s job is to send you the right person. Your job is to finish the conversation well.
What an assistant needs before it recommends you
- Access. If your site blocks the crawlers that AI assistants use to read and cite pages, you’re not in the answer. My plain guide to AI crawlers explains which ones to allow.
- Facts in text, not in pictures. Materials, dimensions, origin, care, price and availability should be written on the page, not only shown in a lookbook image or a PDF. Assistants quote what they can read.
- Structured product data. Product markup with price, availability, shipping and return details lets search engines and assistants state those facts with confidence instead of guessing.
- Answers to the questions people actually ask. “How does the sizing run?” “Is it a good gift for someone who travels?” “Will it arrive before December 24?” If your product pages answer these plainly, an assistant can repeat the answer and link to you.
- One version of the truth. Keep names, prices and specifications the same on your site, in your product feeds and on any marketplace. When sources disagree, assistants hedge or pick someone else.
What the visitor needs when they land
AI-referred shoppers often skip your homepage. The product page they land on has to do the homepage’s work as well as its own:
- One line on who you are and why the piece is made the way it is
- The reasons to trust you, such as craftsmanship, guarantees and heritage, close to the price instead of three clicks away
- Delivery dates, shipping costs and returns, stated near the button, including the last order date for holiday delivery
- A way to reach a person, whether that’s a phone number, a chat with a real advisor or a private appointment
Check it on a phone first. Adobe expects 57.4% of this season’s US online spending to happen on mobile devices.
Measure it separately
In Google Analytics 4, AI assistants mostly appear as referrals from domains such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. ChatGPT also tends to add utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it shows. Create a custom channel group called “AI assistants” so these visits stop hiding inside “Referral.” Some AI visits still arrive without a referrer and land in “Direct,” so treat the number as a floor.
Where to start: ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the question your best client would ask before buying from you, in their words, not yours. See whether you appear, what they say about you and which page they link to. Then open that page on your phone and read it as if you had never heard of the brand. If you want a faster read, my free AI Visibility Check looks at your site the way these assistants do.
