Waterfall: Shortness of Breath

Long exposures of falling water, printed to canvas. Movement collapses into vertical fields of gold, violet and blue; the darker mineral flecks are the only fixed points left in the frame.

Nineteenth-century landscape painters treated the natural world as the great unresolved subject — the thing worth looking at hardest, before the city gave them something louder to look at. These are made with a camera, a polariser and a set of LEDs rather than a brush, and they arrive somewhere close to the same place: water held still long enough to stop behaving like water.
